Quantum Design’s 3rd Annual Winter School

This weeklong winter school is geared towards graduate students in the second half of their PhD and lab managers. Advanced training on the PPMS® DynaCool®, PPMS® VersaLab®, MPMS®3, and FusionScope® will be the central focus. Specific measurement options discussed will be tailored to the needs and interests of the attending students, who are encouraged to bring samples.

6 PLACES. 1 WEEK. LIMITLESS LEARNING.

Learning by doing

The Quantum Design Winter School offers PhD students and early-career researchers something that can be difficult to find elsewhere: the opportunity to move beyond theory and develop practical, hands-on expertise with advanced measurement systems.

For UK attendee Sivaloganathan Kumaran, a PhD Candidate at the University of Cambridge, the 2024 Winter School was one of the most valuable experiences of his PhD. The intensive week combined theoretical presentations with hands-on demonstrations, experiments and tailored measurements using attendees’ own research samples and devices.

“Attending the Quantum Design Winter School 2024 was an invaluable experience that significantly enriched my practical understanding of experimental quantum physics…

Sivaloganathan Kumaran

Rather than simply learning how instruments work, participants were encouraged to bring their most challenging samples and work directly with Quantum Design application experts to explore measurement techniques, troubleshoot experiments and identify ways to improve their research. Sessions covered systems including the MPMS 3 and DynaCool, alongside insights into technologies such as FusionScope and OptiCool.

For Kumaran, the combination of practical skills, expert guidance, problem-solving and networking made the Winter School a genuinely valuable experience – helping transform participants from instrument users into more confident, capable researchers.

The benefits extended beyond technical training. The collaborative environment encouraged participants to share experiences, discuss experiments and data processing, and build relationships with fellow researchers and experienced scientists. Social activities also provided opportunities to network and learn about potential future career paths.
