Capturing Saturn on a SWIR Camera

As well as imaging Venus, German researcher Dr. Sebastian Voltmer has captured Saturn in NIR (890 nm) through a C11 EdgeHD telescope with an attached SWIR camera from Raptor Photonics, specifically the Ninox 640 II SWIR.

Dr. Voltmer spoke about the improved signal-to-noise ratio that the Raptor Photonics Ninox 640 II SWIR provides when he was using it to image Venus a couple of years ago:

“In my previous images of Venus from May 2020 I only used planetary CCD cameras with NIR sensitivity. It was hard to get any signal of Venus’s surface. But with the cooled Ninox 640 II SWIR camera I got a much better signal-to-noise ratio. With the Ninox 640 II SWIR camera I was able to reveal the surface and the lower clouds in one image”
