Validating Your UVC Disinfection System using ILT’s Light Measurement Systems

If you are using a UVC light-based disinfection system you are probably scrambling to deploy tools to combat the COVID-19 outbreak.

Increasingly hospitals and medical facilities are looking to disinfect their personal protective equipment (PPE) using UV light. Verifying the intensity of the light reaching the PPE is a critical step in validating that the correct UV dose is being applied to ensure proper decontamination.

Here’s where we and International Light Technologies can help you. For 55 years International Light Technologies has been developing and making light measurement systems for variety of light measurement applications. All of ILT’s meters are NIST traceable and come with an ISO17025 accredited calibration certificate. No matter what disinfection system or light source you are using, ILT has the tools to assist you.

What Do You Need To Measure?

All light measurement starts with the source. Different light sources require different types of systems to accurately measure them. The Ultraviolet light spectrum consists of wavelengths from 100 nm to 405 nm. UVC light in particular consists of wavelengths between 100 – 280 nm. The following is a list of common lamp types used in UVC disinfection applications:

• Low pressure mercury lamps
• Low pressure amalgam lamps
• Medium pressure mercury lamps
• Excimer lamps
• Light emitting diodes (LEDs)
• Xenon lamps, pulsed UV LEDs, and other pulsing light sources

To better assist you in your fight against COVID-19 and other infectious diseases, ILT has configured and calibrated systems especially for measuring light sources found in common UV germicidal and disinfection systems. Each of these meters comes complete with a calibrated detector, ISO17025 accredited and NIST traceable calibration certificate, and a rugged carrying case. Detectors are attached to cables ranging from 3′ to 7′ in length, allowing for remote measurements. Simply turn the meter on and start measuring!
