Dynamic Interferometry for Metrology Workshop Review

4D Technology Dynamic Interferometry for Metrology Workshop Review

QDUKI and 4D Technology co-hosted this event at the OpTIC Tech Centre, Glyndŵr University, St Asaph on 16 March 2023.

We are excited to develop 4D Technology in the UK and Ireland. Our new partners manufacture accurate metrology for tough environments and difficult measurements. 4D’s patented Dynamic Interferometry® technology enables measurements in difficult environments, where vibration, air turbulence or rapid motion have traditionally prevented accurate measurement. This is a new market for us at QDUKI, that compliments our existing optics product range.

The workshop was a massive success; it was great to meet all the delegates and raise awareness and understanding about the technology. We were also delighted with our hosts at the OpTIC Tech Centre, at the Wrexham Glyndŵr University.

“QDUKI and 4D Technology organised excellent interferometry training. One of the best I have attended in a long time; your colleagues from 4D Technology and Glyndŵr University did an amazing job. By starting with an general introduction to interferometry you made the training easily accessible to newbies or people who are just a bit rusty (like me). The tour of the production and metrology lab at the Optic technium was fascinating. Thank you for a great opportunity.”

Workshop Contents

The workshop covered the theory and practical aspects of dynamic interferometry:

  • Interferometry principles for 3D shape and transmitted wavefront measurements
  • Dynamic interferometry – what it is, how it works
  • Unique capabilities using dynamic interferometry

Attendees were able to operate 4 different optical metrology systems with hands-on demos. They could see the principles in practice, with Q&A and examples. We were able to offer participants the opportunity to:

  • Try it out: Make a micron-level 3D measurement with a handheld optical gauge
  • See an interferometer measure a optic in 30 microseconds without vibration isolation
  • Learn how to separate surface measurements of a transparent concentric dome

“4D Technology has been a supplier of high-end interferometric equipment to the OpTIC Technology Centre, Wrexham Glyndŵr University, for over 15 years. We welcomed the opportunity to host this 4D Dynamic Interferometry Workshop at the OpTIC Technology Centre in St Asaph. The Workshop was organised by Quantum Design, the UK agent for 4D. It was very informative technically and the day presented an excellent opportunity to network with other UK users of high-end interferometric instrumentation. I’d like to thank both 4D Technology and Quantum Design for allowing us to host the day and look forward to similar events in the future in support of the UK photonics sector.”

About 4D Technology

For over 20 years, 4D Technology has been a leader in innovative metrology products for measuring surface quality and surface defects on precision surfaces, as well as the surface and wavefront quality of optics. 4D’s patented Dynamic Interferometry® technology enables measurements in difficult environments, where vibration, air turbulence or rapid motion have traditionally prevented accurate measurement.

During that time, 4D interferometers have been used to assure the quality of some of science’s most challenging telescope projects, both terrestrial and in space. An early customer was NASA, which used several instruments to measure the James Webb Space Telescopes multi-mirror components, the alignment of those mirrors, and the supporting structure for them, both in air and in cryo- and vacuum-chamber tests.

About the OpTIC Technology Centre,

The OpTIC Technology Centre, owned by Wrexham Glyndŵr University and operated by Glyndŵr Innovations, is a landmark building in a setting that inspires creativity, innovation, and a desire to succeed. It provides R&D and serviced innovation facilities for start-up and early-stage companies. It also specialises in innovative optical systems, product development, engineering and technology consulting. It has developed cutting-edge technology with an unparalleled array of highly specialist equipment and laboratory space. The Centre attracts all areas of technology innovation particularly within the advanced manufacturing and life science sectors. It has a dedicated Space Incubation Programme offering funded support to businesses.
